Integrated Pest Management – Principles and Techniques for the Home Gardener

Bernadette Clueit, Humboldt County Master Gardener

You’ve probably heard about Integrated Pest Management, or IPM, but do you feel like you need to know more?  IPM is an ecosystem-based method of pest control. It uses environmentally sound techniques to reduce the risks of adverse effects to human health, beneficial and non-target organisms, and the environment.  This workshop covers all the components of a successful IPM program. You will learn proven techniques for biological control, habitat manipulation, and improved cultural practices, among others. We will also delve into reading product labels to build your confidence as an educated consumer.

IPM is a must for anyone who wants to improve their gardening or environmental toolkit.  Successful, healthy gardens and landscapes exist in balance with nature, and IPM helps you attain that balance while also saving you money.  IPM can be applied at any scale in any setting, from an urban container garden to suburban lawn and landscaping, to a large-scale rural farm.  It is also applied in both conventional and organic regimes. There’s really no reason not to practice IPM! Don’t miss this opportunity to learn how to design and implement a personal IPM program that works for you!
