Humboldt Botanical Garden: Tour 2012
We are in the process of identifying prospective gardens to include on the
next tour. The 2012 Garden Tour will highlight gardens in the Loleta/Fortuna
area during the weekend of June 24th.
In case you think it’s too early to start thinking about it…. It’s not! It takes a
bit of time to get the garden in tip top shape. There’s that tree that needs
pruning at just the right time, there's the relocation of those shade lovers, a
few new plants need to get situated, and maybe some mulching that needs to be done. But it can be done!
HBGF isn’t looking for the most formal garden. We’re interested in livable
gardens, whimsical gardens, exotic plants, native plants. We are looking for
gardens with interest.

(See- nothing fancy required......from 2010 Garden Tour )
If you’re interested in participating, contact Chris Beresford @ 826-0259 or

Don't Be Stubborn - it's fun!

HBGF Education Series
January 14 – Pruning at the Garden
Taught by Pete Haggard ; Local author and California Natives expert.
Learn all about pruning trees and shrubs using the correct tools and techniques. There will be a short lecture in the greenhouse followed by a pruning seminar in the Moss Family Temperate Woodland Garden. Class will be rescheduled if raining. This is a hands on class so come prepared with your own pruners, loppers and boots, gloves and rain gear if necessary.
February 18 - Insects of the Pacific Northwest
Taught by Judy Haggard; Local author and consulting biologist.
We are excited to welcome Judy to our Education Series for the first time. She will be lecturing in the big reenhouse all about the insects in our area and their relationship to our environment. Join us for this very interesting and informative class.
March 17 – What’s in a Name?
Taught by Plant aficionado extraordinaire and former Humboldt Botanical Garden Board Member Bruce Palmer.
Bruce Palmer will attempt to answer a number of questions about how the plants in the garden get their scientific names. Some of the topics covered will be: Why are they are often long and complicated? Scientific names change from time to time; why? Why are the names in Latin? They are supposed to describe plants, so why are they often named after people? What are the rules for spelling and pronouncing scientific names? If the plant is a hybrid, what rules apply to naming it? Following the discussion, we will tour the garden, weather permitting, to look first hand at some of the plants, attempting to decipher their names.
NEW – Starting January 19, 2012 and ongoing every Thursday -
Plant Propagation - Free
For those of you who would like to learn more about propagating plant material and are interested
in a more hands on experience, we are offering plant propagation every Thursday from 10 – 2,
weather permitting. This is also a way for HBGF to get plant material ready for our spring plant sale on
May 5 and 12, 2012. We have already received many plants that are ready to be divided, potted up
and/or cuttings made so join the fun with Terry and Denise.
Classes are held at the Humboldt Botanical Gardens in the big greenhouse. We are located at the north entrance to College of the Redwoods on Tompkins Hill Road, Eureka. Please park in the upper lot and walk to the main gate and up the road to the greenhouse. If you have a disability or need assistance please tell the person at the gate and you can either bring your car in and park by the greenhouse or we have an electric cart than can take you to where you need to be. Any questions please call our office at 442-5139
All lecture/tours will begin at 1pm. Pre-registration is not required, but is appreciated
($10 fee for non-members).
